 Dear Parents,

     Thank you to all the parents that have donated food for our Holidays Around the World! This week there will be no half sheet homework or fluency. There will only be a packet on Mexico and Sweden for homework due on Friday. I hope you all received my e-mail I sent out on Friday night. If you didn't please make sure you read below.

    • If you'd like to donate crayons (non-toxic), coloring books, playing cards, or puzzles, please do so by Friday (12/19). Ms. Mary Anne and I will be bringing them to TCH by Friday or Saturday.
  • WINTER CLASS PARTY (Friday, 12/19 @ 11:30-12:30)

    • For the class party we will be having a mug exchange. Please send your child to school with a wrapped holiday mug (under $3) for the exchange.
    • We will be having a hot chocolate bar to go along with our movie.
    • Don't forget to send your child to school in their pajamas and bring a small pillow and/or blanket for the afternoon movie.
    • TIPS (I don't want your child to be carrying too much or unnecessary things, so I thought this might be helpful.) 
      1. We don't need folders/planners on this day, so I suggest you leave those at home.
      2. Because of the limited space in the class, please be sure his/her pillow and blanket fit in the one bag that they will be bringing to school. This can be one big bag... doesn't have to be their backpack. The large reusable bags are perfect.

Progress reports were sent home on Friday. Please make sure you sign and return them by Wednesday. Progress reports for now on will have the average of tests/quizzes and classwork. We will have one more test in each subject before the grading period ends on the 19th.

  • The benchmark test will be sent home this week. Look over what your child missed. Those are the things to continue to work on at home.

    • Don't forget Tuesday and Friday are the winter programs
      • Tuesday the program starts at 6:30 and is at the Second Baptist Church across the street from the school. Please have your child their 15 minutes before showtime.
      • The girls will be wearing something over their leotard and tights, that will be provided by Ms. Scott. You may send you child in a dress or some type of coverup. 
    • The upcoming weeks we will be learning about holidays around the world. We will be doing crafts and having treats. Tomorrow I will post a sign up sheet if you would like to volunteer to bring something.

    Dear Parents,
    • A big thank you to all the parents for meeting with me during parent teacher conferences. It's pleasing to know that all of you are playing an active role in your child's education.
    • Don't forget Landform Projects are due on Thursday.
    • Class Dojo Rewards - Every Friday I will be calculating each student's points for the week. They will get to pick a reward based on the points earned. They may pick from that category or anything below it. Below is the list of their rewards. 
      • 5 - 9 Points (Sticker, Tattoo)
      • 10 - 14 Points (Candy, End of the line, Message parent through Class Dojo)
      • 15 - 19 Points (No shoes in class for a day, Line leader for the day, Brand new pencil) 
      • 20 - 29 Points (Book share, Send a picture to your parents, Teacher Helper for the day, Reading Buddy, Show your talent)
      • 30 - 39 Points (10 Minutes of iPad or Computer, Bring a fluffy friend, Show and Tell, Class Photographer for the day)
      • 40 - 49 Points (Wear a crown for the day, Treasure Box, Sharpen pencil at anytime)
      • 50 Plus Points (Use a pen for the day, no homework pass, Use the teacher's desk for one period)

    They will need assistance in selecting a preferred puzzle and the number of pieces.

    Reminders

    • Don't forget to wear orange tomorrow. If your child is not wearing orange, they must come to school in the normal uniform.
    • If you haven't paid for the field trip please make sure you do so tomorrow.
    • This week as a whole class we read "I Wanna Iguana" and "Where the Wild Things Are". Both of these books can be found on Scholastic Reading Counts.

    Field Trip

    Dear Parents,
        
         I hope everyone had a great time at the fall carnival! Below is the information about the European Brochure project. Click the following links for a blank copy of the brochure. Be sure to click on each word for both sides. Blank Brochure

    Due: October 27th
    • Your child has already chosen a country. National Geographic Kids, Ducksters, or even National Geographic are good websites to use for this project. The students should be able to navigate National Geographic Kids on their own. I will be using these brochures as a resource in the class library. Your child should be doing their best work.
    • Along with the brochure your child also needs to bring some type of artifact/object that represents their county. They are also more than welcome to bring a food to share with the class that represents that country.
    • Please make sure your child is filling out the blank lines on the front of the brochure. They need to write one sentence about the country or a phrase, maybe even the countries motto if they have one.
    • I will be grading on the following
      • quality (written neatly, pictures drawn and colored in nicely) The pictures may also be printed. In that case they should be cut out and pasted correctly.
      • spelling and punctuation
      • object that is brought
      • is this the student’s work
      • are all parts completed

    Fall Carnival

    • FALL CARNIVAL - October 17th
      • Our elementary is sponsoring an obstacle course moonwalk. The cost of the moonwalk is $7/student, and you DO NOT have to bring a bag of candy. If you have already paid the $10, I will make sure that you get your change back. It will be sent home in your child's folder.
    • SPA (Silverline Parent Alliance) sent home an order form for a Silverline Spirit Shirt. If you'd like to order a shirt, the deadline to turn in forms/payment has been extended.
    • Wednesday look for info to be sent home and posted about a European at home project. 
    • Field Trip - The class will be taking a field trip Thursday, October 23rd. The cost of the field trip will be $12.
    • Thank you to all the parents who donated a book to the classroom from the Scholastic Book Fair.  I truly do appreciate it.

    Dear Second Grade Parents,

    • Friday we will be doing an apple tasting. Your child will need to bring one apple on Friday. If your child number is 1-5 (green), 6-10 (yellow), 11-16 (red). Please bring the correct color, so that we have enough of each to try.

    Week 3

    Dear Second Grade Parents,

          I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed that cooler weather. On Friday your child was sent home with their Spelling/Vocab Test and Math Test. Please talk to your child about taking their time and reading the questions carefully on tests. Sign and return both test on Monday. Also Scholastic book orders were sent home. You may order the books online by going to https://clubs2.scholastic.com/ and putting in the activation code on the front of your child's flyer. Ordering books through scholastic is an extra way for you to get books for your child at a great price! Also, these are books you can use for our Scholastic Reading Counts! program.

         I am currently working on inputting all the info for Scholastic Reading Counts!. Please check your child's folder this week for their username and password.  Click HERE to preview the letter that will be going home with your child's username and password. I will also include how to log into BrainPOP Jr. I strongly suggest exploring Khan Academy. If you choose to sign your child up, it is free, add me as their teacher and I can keep track of their progress. My class code is YVFR64.

         Next week we will be talking about community helpers.  If you are a community helper (doctor, nurse, firefighter, mailman, police officer, etc.) and would like to come speak to the class about your job, please let me know. We can set up a time. The exact day is Thursday, September 25th. I would love to have a couple parents come talk about their job as a community helper.

    • The notes in their planner are what we did in class that day. From now on the homework slot will just be for additional homework.

    Frist Week of September Down

    Welcome to 2nd Grade

    Dear Second Parents,
        
         The first week flew by! I hope your child had a wonderful week. I can't wait to get to know each student better as the year goes on. Every Sunday you will be able to find the weekly update right here. I do post things every now and then during the week.

    Important Information
    • REMIND ME - If you would like messages/reminders through text please text @msdsroo to 832-730-4320
    • SIGN UP GENIUS - I will have sign-ups through out the year. I use Sign Up Genius and will always include the link in the blog. We already have our first sign up! On Wednesday we will be making some fun rock snacks that represent the 3 types rocks. If you would like to volunteer to bring something, click the following link. -----> Rock Snack
    • SUPERKIDS - Please check your email to complete the last step for the Superkids Parent Portal. Once completed, you will be able to access the stories.
    • K6THINKCENTRAL - I will have information about the K6ThinkCentral on next weeks blog.
    • FOLDERS and PLANNERS - Please check and empty these daily
      • Graded classwork will be going home on Tuesday, 09/02.
      • Homework is due everyday. Even though it is completed in "After-school homework time," I encourage you to go over it with your child. Please don't forget to read with your child at least 20 minutes/day and to log it in their planner. 
      • Fluency is due on Fridays.  
      • Please make sure you are signing next to your child's behavior. 
    • IMPORTANT PAPERS - If you have not yet turned in the papers from your orientation packet, please turn them into me ASAP.

      • NO SCHOOL (LABOR DAY)

      • Start of tutorials. 
      • If your child is an extended day student and you would like them to have tutorials, you may drop off your child in the first grade classroom at 7:05 or have them wait for me in the cafeteria. I will pick them up between 7:15 and 7:20. Students arriving before 7 should still be dropped-off in the cafeteria.
      • If your child would like to have breakfast, please continue to drop them off in the cafeteria. Ms. Alex will be bringing the elementary students (1st-4th) from the cafeteria to their respective classes at 7:50am.
